Equallogic PS 6100 reset to factory and setup
Hello
I have EqualLogic PS 6100 controller and did a reset using cli. It wiped everything and started setup.
However when I go through the setup name, IP, etc first it says looks like it was running before do you want to restart? I said yes and it is cycling with error can't bring eth0 on line. I 100% sure it is on the network, swaped all cables and tested on other switch, there is no light on eth0 (management port) once you plug the cable.
This is kinda urgent and I need a solution if anyone knows.
Thanks

Hello,
By default the Management port (ETH4 here) is NOT enabled. Put a cable on that if you want to use the out-of-band dedicated management feature. Which has to be enabled later.
The other interfaces should be connected, but the default one to start is ETH0. If not link is detected when you configure it, the setup will fail.
Once you have it setup, and can access the GUI, you can enable the Management Feature. You don't just assign that port a different IP. You must enable the Dedicated Management Feature and confgure the IPs for management there. Otherwise the Discovery Address is used for both iSCSI session logins and management.

Don

Hello,
You first set it up on iSCSI side then you can enable the Mgmt port address. The mgmt port is ETH4, not ETH0.
There must be a cable connected to ETH0 and the light lit
However it won't be enabled until AFTER you enter in the IP, netmask information. Then it will bring that port up.
I would first do the array reset again.
Then try the setup process.

Don

Ok. Thank you for the prompt reply. I just reset it again and will try your suggestion.
So the management port should eth4 and should be plugged in to switch as well? Am i getting it right?
thanks

Hello,
Sorry you found it confusing. If you had the Remote Setup Wizard software, you can do it from a Windows PC or Linux. It will search the network for unconfigured EQL arrays. Then you can do it via a GUI.
I like the Equallogic personally. Even when I first started there I was an outside contractor. The GUI was quick and easy to configure everything. I was lucky enough to get hired a full time employee after that.
I am so glad you got it working. I was glad to be of assistance.

Don

Seems to me that solve the problem. Thank you for your help.
What came to mine mind after that - If you want to meet illogic - go get an EqualLogic :) JK

Hello,
Then you are in luck. All the features of GUI are at CLI too.
The online help has a link to the CLI commands. But you will figure them out quickly as it's consistent.
Basically Group level commands. grpparams and member level commands
GrpName>grpparams show
GrpName>member select MEMBERNAME show MEMBERNAME is what you called it during setup.
e.g. GrpName>member select Production-Member-1 show (general stats)
GrpName> member select Production-Member-1 show eths

There's TAB completion for member or volume names and ? will give you a list of options for that command.
member select Production-Member-1 show ?
channelcards - Displays information about the installed channel cards.
connections - Shows active connections to the member.
controllers - Displays information about the installed control modules
.
disks - Displays summary of disk information.
enclosure - Displays a summary of enclosure information.
eths - Shows a summary of information about the network interfa
ces.

I too prefer CLI to GUI. I was raised on terminals LOL
Have a great night.

the phase 2 started :)
I am trying to configure networking properly and it drives me nuts.
There are 5 interfaces one is dedicated to management and 4 for iscsi.
However one on iscsi side configured with management network (on 10 other units). I am trying to understand the architecture of communication inside the unit to setup it properly. I was able to run web interface grp admin but have no luck connecting SAN HQ from management host which is on the same subnet.
Any idea how it supposed to be done including all pieces SAN HQ management interfaces and iscsi interfaces.
Thank you in advance.

Hello,
There are two "modes" for management on PS arrays. With and without Dedicated Management Enabled. That last Ethernet port only works properly when it's configured as a Management port.
WITHOUT Dedicated Management Feature:
The four Ethernet ports (ETH0-3) all provide iSCSI traffic AND management functions. Though typically you use the Group IP / Discovery address for most operations.
WITH Dedicated Management feature ENABLED:
The iSCSI ports (ETH0-3) no longer support any management operations. No GUI, or SSH, etc.. Those ports now only handle iSCSI traffic. All Management operations will now use the Group Management IP address. Also known as the Management Well Know Address. (MWKA)
SANHQ needs access to the "management port" of the group and members. So if you are NOT using Dedicate Management, that's the single Group / iSCSI Discovery IP address. If you DO have Dedicated Management enabled, then SANHQ must use the Management Well Known Address (MWKA) instead.
You should not have some iSCSI ports on arrays with a Dedicated Management port on your LAN IP subnet this could put iSCSI traffic on your LAN. Which could impact performance. Ideally all iSCSI ports are on the same IP subnet. Otherwise you must route those networks to maintain proper function on the array. Any iSCSI port will be used to reach any other member or server accessing the group. Routing adds latency and potentially a performance bottleneck and point of failure. If that router fails it could impact many servers.
In SANHQ when you add a group, that registers that server on the PS group automatically. You have to connect it to the proper management IP address depending on the Group configuration. Whether Dedicated Management is enabled or not.

Don

Hello,
You absolutely CAN reconfigure IP address w/o a reset.
Since you are changing IP addresses disconnect any servers first.
First disable the Dedicated Mgmt feature so Mgmt is on iSCSI subnet
Then pick an interface like ETH3 and put it in the new IP subnet for iSCSI.
Then change the Group IP address to be on the same IP subnet as ETH3.
Then change the other iSCSI Ethernet ports to be on the new iSCSI subnet.
Finally re-enable and configure the Dedicated Mgmt port on the network you want it on.
There are some threads here in this forum on how to change the IPs using the CLI.

Don

thanks Don,
this is the logical way. 1 port is on management (once I enable it) and 4 on iscsi. and SANHQ Should connect to IP of management port. This is what I thought. Seems to me I have to blow everything away one more time. Too bad can't simply reconfigure Group IP and etc.

Hello,
When you enable Dedicated Management is when you get that 2nd "Group IP " address.
Technically what happens is instead of having a single iSCSI discovery address and Management address you have two since they are on different IP networks.
So the one for iSCSI address Discovery and login process.
The other is strictly for Management functions. So when adding in a group you need the Management address.
Your screenshots haven't shown up so I can't comment on it.
If this is new group, then just assign an iSCSI subnet IP address. Then enable the other as well Access the EQL GUI and configure the Dedicated Management.

Don

Ok, it is phase 3
1. I configured as I think it is supposed to be.
ETH0 was configured with iscsi IP address 172.20.10. 10
Once it is up and running I used GUI to enable management network on ETH4 and set IP 192.168.200.153
I can use web browser to connect to storage using java based app, but there is no luck using SAN HQ. It will not be able to connect to the storage by any IP.
What I am doing wrong?
thanks
