Equallogic Group Manager using openjdk 11?

With Oracle's upcoming license changes, and the removal of Java Web Start from Java 9 and later -- how are we supposed to manage our Equallogic storage arrays going forward?

Hello Robert Jacobson,

I am checking on this. I am not seeing any release notes about this but will see if I can find out some information about it.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello,

The next EQL FW versions for 8.1.x, 9.1.x and 10.0.x are scheduled to support Java 9 and Java 10.

  Regards,

This doesn't really answer the question.  The issue is Group Manager requires Java web start.  Oracle is no longer provided Java web start after version 8.  There is an open source alternative, IcedTea-Web, that we have tried without success.  How will Equallogic address this issue?

Hello,

 EQL firmware v9.1.8 and v10.0.2 already support Java 9 and 10.  I would suggest v10.0.2 vs. 9.1.8

I have some older devices, that also don't work with Java 8+, my solution was to create a VM with an older Java Runtime for those devices.

 Regards,

Don

Dell-Sam L,

We're you ever able to find an answer from Dell/Equallogic on this topic?  Most organizations will be moving away from Oracle's version of Java since they are charging for it now.  Java web start is a major issue for applications like Group Manager.  See the following bug from an open source web start provider:

https://github.com/AdoptOpenJDK/IcedTea-Web/issues/67

It clearly explains that Dell/Equallogic should be able to fix the Group Manager implementation to support other (non-Oracle) implementations of web start.

Also, this is a security risk to our organization to use an older version of Java just so we can access Group Manager.  I realize Java 9+ is supported but the issue is there's no Java web start included with those versions.

Thanks

I've gotten a confirmation from Dell that Group Manager is not supported on openjdk. Further it is not an "Oracle Approved Product" for Oracle Java licensing, so anyone using Group Manager for business purposes will require a commercial license for Java.

"Group Manager is not an Oracle approved product and that openjdk (unjava) is not currently supported."

Hello,

Since openJDK is an open source project not backed by a commercial entity getting commercial level support is very difficult.   It does not mean it won't work but if you have problems you will need to get support from the openJDK support community.

Don
