Dell san qualLogic
Hi All,
We have two Dell EqualLogic sans both different models. One is PS6100 and the other is a PS6210 and the PS6210 has a drive failure. The PS6100 has two spare drives and my question is can i take out the spare drive and put it in the PS6210 where the drive has failed. The only difference between the drives is the disk model and revision apart from that they are identical in size and speed. And they are configured as raid 50. I am also thinking of ordering the following discs below and would these discs work in the PS6210
Seagate ST1200MM0088 1.2TB SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) Hard Disk Drives
PS6100
model 70-0400
==============
ps6210
model 70-0425
Any help would be appreciated

Hello,
I am assuming both of these arrays are no longer under contract? I don't recall any difference in drive carriers between the two. As long as they are same size and speed you could do the swap.
Re: R50. Dell strongly suggests RAID6 vs. RAID50. RAID50 is two R5 strips combined. So a dual failure of one raidset will take that member offline. You can convert from R50 to R6 live.
You cannot use OEM or non EQL Dell drives in the PS Series SAN. So a Dell drive from a server or MD storage will NOT work. The drives have to be made for the PS Series. The MFR creates them for the EQL so the array will recognize the drive as authorized. You can't buy drives for out-of-warranty drives from Dell so you would need a 3rd party source.
