Dell Equalogic raid recommendation

Hi,

We have eight ps6110 arrays.  First four is a mix of SSD(7 drives each 400GB) and 10K SAS(17 drives each 600GB) and another 4 is all 7.2K SAS (each drive is 3TB).

I have few questions

1) Which is the recommended raid in such a case?

2) Do we need to isolate arrays into 2 or more groups since we have different types of disks?

3) If we make one big group with one pool, will the performance degrade?

Thanks

Paras,

I would say this is an easy one. What you have is a PS6110XS which means it is a Hybrid one. A Hybrid one supporting only one RAID level and this is RAID6 Accellerated.

For models with >1TB drives Dell suggest that you use RAID6 to avoid a double disk failure during a Rebuild which can took a long time with large and slow NLSAS/SATA drives.

Dont mix very fast/less capacity units together with slow/large capacity units. So create 2 different pools and place similar members together which means in your case 4 PS6110XS Hybrids in one pool and the 4 PS6110E? into another one.

If you plan to use (async-)replication you have to create a 2nd Group for your 4 PS6110E units.

Yes, the performance would be degrade because the Capacity Loadbalance which be kick in first and place to data on the large units.

Joerg
