can i upgrade the type 11 controllers in my equilogic ps6100x to type 14 for 10G connection

Is this a possibility?

does this basically make the 6100 a 6110?

Any thoughts?

Hello,

You can not do it on a configured system.  You would have to reset it back to factory defaults.  install the 10GbE controllers then reconfigure the array and restore your data.   What version of EQL FW is that array using?

Hello,

Thanks.  In that case you likely want to transfer the SD card from the GbE to the 10GbE controllers. Unless you happen to get lucky and the 10GbE have 10.0.3. SD cards.

Also, the 6110 controller ONLY runs at 10GbE.  It does NOT sync down to GbE.  Mixing 10GbE storage with GbE servers is also not a good idea.  You will need a good 10GbE switch for iSCSI SAN use.  Make sure you have 2x 10GbE ports trunked between the 10GbE switches.  You want flowcontrol enabled and Data Center Bridging (DCB)  OFF on the switch.

Unless you were planning on moving to 10GbE servers, and if you have SANHQ installed, you might find that you are NOT network bound, so just going to 10GbE won't make the SAN faster.

 Good luck.

I just picked up an HP DL360 G8 with 2x10G ports.  My thoughts are migrate all the VM's off the PS6100 to my older PS6000 then re-config the PS6100 with the new10G controllers (Type14).

Then connect the new HP server and newly created 10Gb PS6100 and then migrate the VM's that are drive intensive to the new storage and host. I will have to connect the 10G switch to the older 1g switch just to be able to do migrations but will keep running VM's on the new HP server stored on the new PS6100.  I will slowly upgrade the rest of the Servers (VM Hosts, G7's) to G8's or G9's with 10G until they are all migrated.

Thoughts?
Does this make sense?

Andrew

Hello Andrew,

Yes, it does make sense.  How many servers do you have now?   One server is not going to provide a big boost in IO performance with 10GbE NICs vs GbE NICs.  Vmware is rarely MB/sec bound.  It's about many VMs issuing IOs to the SAN.  If you have SANHQ installed you will likely see that you don't even use the full bandwidth of the GbE interfaces.

I would think having multiple servers at GbE would be better than one at 10GbE.  Also, using both the 6000 and 6100 would overall provide additional IO capability.   You could move some VMs to the PS6000 to provide more IO capacity to the 6100 for more critical VMs.

Long term, since EQL is EOL, you might want to think of what your next SAN storage is gong to be.

Adding some GbE NICs to the new server might be the best option IMO.

Don
