Add new member and update firmware
Hello,
I have a group of 4 Equallogic arrays
1xPS4000 (Type: 70-0120) and
3xPS6100 (Type: 70-0400)
These all have firmware v6.0.4
The new array is a PS6210XV. I am pretty sure that the firmware on this one will be newer probably with a v7.x release.
At the documentation for firmware upgrade it states that I should upgrade all the arrays on my group first and then add the new on the group.
I was hoping to add the new array and move some of the volumes to that one, upgrade the one array that I emptied, add it again to the pool, empty an other etc etc.
Is that possible?

Yes, technically this is possible and it is something we've considered before. However, depending on how much data you're moving around, this could be a very time-consuming process. Volume moves have a low priority for array processes and happen slowly in the background. And although you can queue many volume moves, only one volume moves at a time. If you're dealing in several TBs, this could easily take weeks to move data in one direction. Then you update that array, then move volumes back, rinse, repeat. Keep in mind, if this process stretches beyond a few days, you'll be running a group with firmware mismatches for an extended period of time and I doubt that is advisable.

About the disks, they are SAS 10k on 2arrays and 15k on th others. The new array also has 15k disks. Different capacities, 300GB, 500GB and 600GB.
Yes, VMWare Esxi 5.5.
I really liked the scenario of having an empty array to upgrade.

Thanks a lot Donald.
After a bit of thought I think that I will create a new group With the new array and transfer with storage vmotion the datastores there. Once an array is emtpy I will move it to the new group with an updated firmware and so on.
