Hello, and welcome to the Forums.
Back when we first were looking at Enterprise class storage arrays I had the same question. Turns out that the answer depends on you perspective. Ic ould say that there is no difference, but that isn't completely right. DMX is Symmetrix, but Symmetrix isn't necesarily DMX.
Symmetrix is the product family of Enterprise class arrays from EMC. It includes the older models like the 8830, the more recent DMX models and the newest VMax series.
DMX describes a specific series of Symmetrix arrays which used a new (at the time) architecture (Direct Matrix) for interconnecting components. Until the release of the VMax the DMX4 was top of the line array from EMC. Even within the DMX line there were different "generations": DMX, DMX2000, DMX3, DMX4, etc.
Hope this helps clarify things.

Hi,
Architecture wise DMX is upgradation of Symmetrix family. The basic architecture of Symmetrix is called MOSAIC and this is extended to enhance symm to DMX family.
Other differences would be the global cache memory capacity, higher number of disks support, number of ports(for host connectivity) on channel adapters, performance, less power consumption, Higher Enguinity versions, etc etc ...
You should be finding more features added as you go on make yourself familiar to new DMX families.
Cheers,
