What are the costs of 1 GB
Often I get the question, what are the costs of 1 GB storage!
There are just too many dependencies to answer this question.
When I play stupid I would say:
Example: We invested in new hardware VNX/Replication manager/Etc for 480.000 dollar running 83 TB of storage RAW.
480000/83=5 783
So one TB of a price of 5783 dollar. Devide this by 1000 and I get 1 GB for about 6 dollar.
Or is this just to simple and is there a golden rule or tool to calculate this?

You are asking for the TCO. This might include buying the machine with its support contracts, but also your SAN infrastructure and maybe even HBAs and software like PowerPath. And then there's HR. How many people does it take to manage this thing. I'd say only you in this case, but maybe you should know how many paid hours are spent during the lifetime of this storage capacity. And what about backup? If a customer asks you for 100GB of storage, does he want a backup as well? How long does this backup need to be available? How many times does the backup need to run per week or day? Are tapes involved, or Avamar for example? What about the TCO of your backup infra? If that's using ethernet, you need to know what infra costs you have as well. Switches, routers, cables, again people and contracts.
If you count up all these factors 1GB just might be a little more expensive than simply deviding the cost of the quote by the amount of TBs in that machine.
