Usable disk space

Just started working with a new VNXe 3100 unit. When I configure the disks, the 600GB SAS drives quickly turn into 488GB drives.

Is it typical to lose this much space? By the time I configure a 5 drive RAID5 pool I'm down to 1.9TB.

Feeling a bit ripped off at his point.

Thanks, MGK

That seems a bit off to me, but I don't have any 600GB drives in my VNX. In general I would expect the usable capacity of a 600GB drive on any CLARiiON\VNX platform to come in around 535 GB or so, then you would lose whatever factor based on RAID configuration. Not sure what to tell you without more information to base it on.

Are you including any of the first four disks in your RAID set? If so there is a slice of each one that is set aside for the operating system and so any other disks included in this set will also only allow you to use as much space as is available from the OS disks.
