NX4 Startup Issues
We recently purchased an EMC NX4 from a clearing house. When we assembled the unit we found that we could not boot
the management server. We connected a video cable directly to the unit and found that it seems to have stalled
on the linux boot screen when loading the kernel. We tried to boot in single user mode and also tried loading a Linux live-cd in
order to check the disks for corruption. All this has not worked and we are not wondering, (before returning the unit) if there is
any way to get the OS disk for the manament station reloaded. Also we tried to boot into the BIOS but a password has been
enabled preventing us from doing so.
The only software that came with the unit is a documentation CD and a quick start guide to set it up.
Any tips or help would be appreciated or specifically can anyone inform me of a process or procedure for reloading or re-imaging the
management server.
Cheers

I have the same issue, only mine was self inflicted trying to upgrade to 6.0. I am in the process of dealing with tech support and awaiting a return call. I'll keep you posted as to what course of action we've taken, but sounds like they'll be sending someone onsite to reimage the control station.

You'll want to connect a serial cable to the port on the far right hand corner with a wrench symbol next to it and connect the other end to a laptop running Hyper Terminal or Putty and connect @ 19,200 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bits, no parity or hardware control. You'll then be able to see what it is doing (which it actually should be doing something). After a few lines using the monitor, it doesn't output to the monitor, that's why you don't see everything. Let me know what you find.

Hello I am not at the client site right now. I will certainly try this when I get there but can you tell me what I should expect to see when I reach the console? Ideally I would like to know if there is some kind of console wizard that will allow me to at least set up basic network connectivity and then log into to a web based management interface in order to complete the configuration. We did not receive any management software with this unit so I am wondering if it is built into the control station.
Thanks

You will most likely only get a login prompt, but it may also give you some more information about what is taking place. I had tech support handling all the commands at the console so I am really no help on what to do once you get a command prompt or otherwise. When I first connected through the serial interface, it was asking yes/no questions at first, then the upgrade failed and then the tech support took over inputting commands (too fast to follow, I might add). Sorry I wasn't any more help.
Good luck.
