Connection to NS600 not possible

Hello,

at the moment we have got a NS600 San Storage for testing in our company. Its a used Mashine which comes out of a IT-Structure of another part of our company. We tried to connect via Ethernet or RS232 to the Control Station and Datamover but there is no Connection. We have the Ip Adresses of them but they arent reachable. Moreover the SAN sends a DHCP Discover in the Network but it takes no IP from our DHCP Server. The Control Station have a RS232 Console but we cant connect to it too. (Are there any special Settings ? Baud? Settings? to connect via RS232 ?)

We read the Manual of the NS600 but we cant find a Recovery Modus or a Full Reset Function. Is is possible?

Another Problem is the Amberlight that is blinking the hole time on the Storage Prozessor when we boot it. So we are looking to reset it.

I know that is a very complex threat but we have no idea how to fix this. Thx in advance

Benjamin

Question: How to reset a forgotten or lost root password on a Linux Control Station using GRUB.
Environment: EMC SW: NAS Code 5.4
Environment: EMC SW: NAS Code 5.5
Environment: EMC SW: NAS Code 5.6
Environment: EMC SW: EMC NAS Code 6.0
Environment: EMC SW: VNX Operating Environment (OE) for File 7.0.12.0 and later
Environment: Product: Celerra File Server (CFS)
Environment: Product: Celerra Network Server
Problem: Cannot log in as root,
Problem: Lost password
Problem: Lost root password
Problem: Forgotten password
Problem: Forgotten root password
Problem: Need to recover from a forgotten or damaged root user account password.
Root Cause: The root password was changed, but the user forgot the changed password, or entered something that could not be remembered later on.
Fix: Use the following procedure to reset the root password:
  1. Access to the Console of the control station is required, so either connect the console physically or use a serial console connection to the Control Station, and a serial program such as Putty, etc.
  2. Boot the Control Station or reboot or reset the power switch if shutdown commands cannot be issued.
  3. When the BIOS checks complete and GRUB is loading, press any key (arrow key is best) to stop it from auto booting in 10 seconds.
  4. Press e to edit the line it is highlighting ("Linux" would be the normal word).
  5. Select/highlight, or arrow-down to the line starting with the word "kernel" and press e to edit.
  6. At the end of the word, append the word "single" with a space in the front and press ENTER.  On later code versions, simply press the spacebar key once, then enter the word "single" without quotes, then the Enter key to accept the change.
  7. Now the highlight should show the word "single" at the end.
  8. Press b to boot from this modified line.
  9. Now the Control Station will boot to single user mode, with a sh-3.2# prompt appearing, which means it logged in as root already.
  10. Issue # passwd root command and enter the new password (with confirmation of same) to be set, which will be the new password.
  11. Running # init 6 will reboot and it should boot automatically as a normal reboot.

Use the new password set at Step 10 for root. With this root login, reset the nasadmin password, if required.

thank you for this solution. We tried it but after boot in single mode the report this:

Checking root file system -> contains a filesystem with errors. Check force

UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY RUN FSCK MANUALLY

An error occured during the filesystem check. Dropping you to a shell.

System will reboot when you leave the shell

Give root password for maintenance (Or type control D for normal startup)

What can we do now ?

Thx in advance

I am looking for the bootdisk to reset the controller. Is there a download available?
