MDT 2012 Update 1. OEM image deployment activation.

Hi.

After updating to MDT 2012 Update 1, the deployment of Dell computers sold with preinstalled Windows fails.
I'm asked for the Product Key..

The Dell OEM Windows Image is my base.
I've searched the web for answers, and narrowed it down to the ImageX not reading the product.ini file.

How can i "make" the MDT 2012 Update 1 use the product.ini file, so that i don't have to manually enter the product-key on every single computer?

FYI, i'm a Dell dealer, and sell several thousand computers a year. So this is quite embarrassing..

Are you using the new ADK (WinPE 4.0)?

No. Still 3.0.

But I managed to fix the issue by adding a script to the task manager that copies the $OEM$ folder from the Image to the deployed computer. This solved the problem.

Windows is now activated with the OEM license during the deployment.

Please supply some more detail, where in the disk is the OEM folder to copy?

Hi.

The folder is located in the "sources"-folder of the ISO/DVD. It's named $OEM$.

Thanks very much for your reply, will definitely have a look there.

Small thing I saw on a document published by Microsoft, really confusing stuff this.

"OEM Specific Information:

  • Organizations do not have the right to reimage by using OEM media.
  • An OEM image can only be preloaded on a PC by the OEM during manufacturing. An image can be individually recovered by the organization (or a service provider they choose) by using the Recovery Media. The OEM recovery media should match the product version originally preinstalled on the system; no other image may be used to restore the system to its original state."

 And this :

"Reimaging Eligibility

Reimaging is permitted if the copies made from the Volume Licensing media are identical to the originally licensed product[1]. Volume Licensing customers who have licensed Microsoft software products from an OEM, through a retail source, or under any agreement other than their Microsoft Volume Licensing agreement may use copies made from Microsoft Volume Licensing media. Customers can use these copies from Microsoft media only if they are the same product and version, contain the same components, and are in the same language.

[1] Windows 7 Enterprise is not available outside the Volume Licensing programs, and is therefore not eligible for reimaging.
