E6420 Windows XP issue
Hello everyone,
Imaging solution: MDT 2010 SP1
Computer: Dell E6420
I am experiencing some weird issues here with our E6420's. Unfortunately we're still using Windows XP SP3 for certain applications so I have to make this work on the E6420's. The first batch of E6420's we received had some minor driver issues with the mass storage drivers but we were able to overcome that by injecting the drivers into the XP image and everyone was happy. Well, we received another batch of the E6420's and every single one is coming up with a BSOD after imaging. The error we saw was that it was unable to mount the storage device. I tried the following things:
1. Install Windows XP using the same XP CD we used to build the original image - no problems found
2. Installed all the standard software on the image and resealed and captured the image
3. Deployed the image to the newer E6420 and an older E6420
The newer one, of which I used to build the image from, BSOD and the older E6420 was fine. The BSOD pointed to a bad storage driver, but since only the newer models were having problems I checked the hard drives on the older batch and the newer batch. It appears that the newer batch has Seagate drives while the older ones had Western Digital and Toshiba drives. Well, for TS purposes I placed the Seagate drive into the older E6420's and the WD drive into the newer E6420 to see if it would make a difference. The newer E6420 with the older WD drive imaged just fine without any problems, but the older E6420 with the new Seagate drive barfed up a missing storage driver error.
So, it looks like everything is pointing to the Seagate drive, but the Dell site does not have any specific storage drivers for the Seagate drives. The model in question is a ST250LT007 by the way.

This problem with the newer models are due to new kind of Hard drivers (AFHDD) which has very limited support for Windows XP. But you can make your image work as it was working on the previous hardware by changing ExtendOemPartition =1 make to it 0 in the sysprep.inf and recapture the image.
It worked for me.
Thanks,
