Dell Command Update Error

I just got the last of my order for a handful of systems which included a few OptiPlex 3040s and a few Precision Tower T3620s. As part of our setup procedure I install an Antivirus on each one (Webroot SecureAnywhere), then run the DCU software to check for driver updates (of which there are always quite a few which makes no sense on a new machine that was presumably imaged since the last driver updates were released, but I digress). This has never been a problem for me in the last.

Starting last week though I was getting an error GUI-UVM15 from the DCU software:

GUI-UVM15 - Load of update catalog data failed

I get this on any of the new machines I am trying to set up. Curiously I was also getting an internet connection error from Dell Digital Download on one of them, however that resolved itself after a couple minutes.

I know these machines can connect to the internet, one of them (an OptiPlex 3040) I gave up on and went to the dell support site and got driver updates from there. This is an exceedingly slow process though that I cannot just set and forget, requiring me to accept the UAC prompt for each driver (which DCU does not require) as well as installing all drivers, not just most.

I can run DCU on other machines in my environment, including other 3040s and T3620s that we have purchased in the last 6 months so I know it is not a firewall or AV issue (they are all using the same AV and go through the same firewall). All are running the same version 2.3.0

Does anyone know what this error code actually means and what it requires to fix it? I cannot continue to apply driver updates this way (it would be even better if Dell would simply update their images every month or so, negating the need for 10 driver updates and 150 Windows updates).

Hello,

I experience the same issue with my XPS15 9560. Please let me know if there are any solutions for this problem. DCU version 2.3.0.

Kind regards

Martin

I finally reached out to Dell Support about this issue. I was told that it is a known issue that version 2.3.0 newly installed on a PC running Windows 7 will prompt this error. The workaround for now is to uninstall DCU v2.3.0, install version 2.2.0 from the driver download page, then let it self update to 2.3.0. I can confirm that this works on the two models that I was having trouble with. The tech that I spoke with mentioned that they were in the process of publishing a KB article with this fix as well.

Run command update using some other admin account than build-in admin account, if domain enviroment add any accout to domain admins and try that or greate local account that is member of administrators.

That is how we fixed our issue, no need to disable virusprotection or anything else just running command update with other credentials.

Were you running Command Update as Administrator?

I had a GUI-UVM15 error that went away when I ran it as Administrator.

Can confirm WxFisch's fix has resolved the issue.

My situation;

  • T1500
  • Fresh install of Windows 7 Pro
  • Dell Command Updater V2.3.0 resulted in this thread's original error
  • Uninstalling, and using v2.2.0 allowed drivers and application to run.

Hope this helps someone else down the line! Thanks WxFisch!
