VRTX hard disks

Hi I have another question about my VRTX

I recently purchased a number of 600Gb and 1.2Tb SAS drives.

The drives appear fine when placed in one of the blades but are not recognised at all when I put them in any of the 2.5" bays in the chassis.

To test I have a 1Tb, non Dell drive, when I put it in the chassis it is detected but shows up as "Blocked", which I was expecting. Am I after purchasing a bunch of drives not compatible with my chassis?

Part numbers:

036RH9

0453KG

087GNY

Appreciate any assistance in advance

Hi,

All 3 drive part numbers is showing compatible with VRTX.

36RH9 HDD, 1.2TB, 512b, P3/SAS6, 10K RPM, 2.5 inch, 64MB, Seagate, Thunderbolt

453KG HDD, 600GB, 512b, SAS12, 10K RPM, 2.5 inch, 64MB, Toshiba, AL13SE Lite,

87GNY HDD, 1.2TB, 512b, SAS6, 10K RPM, 2.5 inch, 64MB, Hitachi, Cobra F

There isn't any known issue on those drive that could not work on VRTX. Does the VRTX CMC show any logs about the drives? Any errors? How about the original drives, does it work on the VRTX chassis? Have you confirmed that the chassis backplane is working fine? If you have verified all the questions I asked and unable to identify the reason, then you will need to abstract the CMC logs (https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000121671/gathering-tty-on-vtrx-cmc) and analyse to try find the root cause. If you need help on log analysis, you can contact the support line to raise a case for investigation.

@DELL-Joey C thank you for your reply. I'm happy to say I did manage to get the disks recognised and they are happily working away in the system now.

Even though the drives were not being recognised there was an error logged to the system when I removed a drive. Also some of the slots in the enclosure were not responding to drives at all.

In the end I discovered the issue was being caused by an out of date firmware. The system was mostly up to date when I got it but the backplane was on firmware 1.0.

I updated to the latest (2.0 I believe) and then all the disks started to be recognised and all the slots in the enclosure also detected drives.

So thank you for your help I have now got my VRTX half populated with drives and working well.
