Limitations of the ECS Community Edition?

Hello Experts,

I deployed ECS CE version 3.8.1.3 to test the “Data Movement- Copy to Cloud” feature as documented here:
https://infohub.delltechnologies.com/nl-nl/l/dell-ecs-data-movement-copy-to-cloud/overview-3919/

According to the documentation, this feature should be supported in version 3.8.0.1 and later.

I have:

  • Deployed using the default CE OVA.
  • Created a bucket with MD Search enabled and the LastModified field indexed.
  • Successfully created an IAM user (via the dedicated ECS UI).

However, I cannot locate the Data Movement UI sections in the Bucket configuration (or elsewhere) as shown in the documentation, particularly the Data Movement policy options detailed here:
https://infohub.delltechnologies.com/nl-nl/l/dell-ecs-data-movement-copy-to-cloud/data-movement-policy-1/

I have encountered conflicting information in the forums:

  • Some posts suggest that Community Edition has feature parity (with differences only in licensing).
  • Others mention that CE lacks the fabric layer necessary for this functionality.

Could you please clarify:

  1. Is the “Copy to Cloud” feature available in the Community Edition?
  2. If so, is it dependent on a fabric layer that CE may not include?
  3. If the feature is not available in CE, what alternatives exist for testing similar functionality in a proof of concept?

Thank you for your assistance!

Hi,

Thanks for your question.

https://dell.to/3ETE6vy it does have the limitation od no fabric layer, but I don’t see anything that says that is required for cloud to copy, but no requirements at all. If you need to test contacting sales is probably the best option.

Let us know if you have any additional questions.

What i know from common ECS Installations, 192GB of RAM is mandatory to even be able to use Copy to Cloud.
