Platter Check desk

How long can a DiskXtender check disk take on a platter that is showing some corrupt files? Site ran a check disk on a platter with no errors and it took 22 minutes. The platter with errors has been running for close to 3 hours with no new entries in its log. Is it stuck and if so how can you cancel the checkdisk? Abort Task in Progress doesn't work for this. Please advise.
