Is it Possible to Make Copies Without Using the Original DVD as Reference?

Dear DiskXtender Support and forum readers,

I have a question on making DVD copies in DiskXtender. From what I've read in the Data Manager Admin Guide, DVD copies can be made either via Copy Manager or the Label Copy media task. Currently, we use Copy Manager during the weekend to make copies. What we found is that it takes about 12 to 13 hours to copy data from one original DVD to another for those media that contains 280,000 files per side (yes we have a lot of small files that are burned onto a DVD side such that each side can fit 280,000 files). On the other hand, writing 280,000 files from a move group in the server to a blank DVD side takes only about 3 to 3.5 hours, which is 1/4 of the time of writing a DVD from the original DVD. As a result, the rate of making Copy DVDs is slower than the rate of new original DVDs created. My question is: Is it possible for DiskXtender to burn the same set of data in a particular move group from the server to more than one DVD? If the same set of data can be burned to two DVDs before it is purged and turned into file tags, then it would take only a total of 6 to 7 hours to burn 280,000 files onto the original DVD side plus its "backup copy" (3 hours for original, 3 hours for "copy") instead of a total of 15 to 17 hours using the original DVD and Copy Manager (3 hours for original, 12 to 13 hours for Copy). If this is feasible, what options are there in DiskXtender that can I configure to achieve this purpose?

Thanks very much for the help.

Samuel

DiskXtender version 6 introduced a Multi-Target Media Group.

From the admin guide:
"Multi-target migration provides improved data availability and
reliability by allowing you to automatically migrate a single file to
multiple targets (pieces ¿ and even different types ¿ of media). In the
event that one of the pieces of media the file has been migrated to is
not available, the file can be fetched from another piece of media in a
different target."

Let me know if this helps.

Hi Frank,

Thanks very much for the reply. The DIskXtender version that I'm using is DiskXtender Version 5.60.049. If you say that multi-target migration isn't introduced until Version 6, does that mean it is not doable in Version 5.60.049 or are there any workarounds?

Thanks.

Samuel,

That is correct. The only way to make a 2nd copy of media in Dx 5.6 is to use the Copy Media Manager. However, if you are using DVD media and using the UDF file system, once the media is finalized in Dx, you could use DVD burning software to make a copy of the DVD, since the UDF file system is readable by Windows 2000 and Windows 2003.

Other than that, you would need to upgrade to Dx 6.0 or 6.1 to take advantage of the Multi-Target media option that Frank mentioned.

Hope that helps.
