DiskXtender for AIX
Hello,
I'm currently trying to get a demo copy of from our EMC team. I have an AIX server connected to Clariion that is running a statistical application called SAS. The SAS data is kept in SAS files stored on the AIX file system/Clariion. As the files become 1 year old we would like to migrate them to a cheaper tier of storage (maybe Netapp filer). Hopefully the users would be able to access the files as if they were still on the Clariion - they might have a slower response time.
Is this a good fit for DiskXtender for AIX?

Hi! For DXUL, if the database was seen as one big file then it would not work. Now, with what you are describing, that is exactly how archiving works. Purge after 1 year settings for files/directories or even system wide in DX –FSM would take care of it. After that any file access would recall the file.
As long as the front end file system is large enough to keep 1 year worth of data along with new data and potentially recalled data. Of course, we could do read-thru as well so that files do not stay on FSM disk. This can be done for FSM/Disk type implementation.
The problem with most systems that directly want to dump, say, an oracle database onto a tiered archiving solution would be that “after a given time or high water marks, as applicable”, files would get removed from one tier , in this case, the file system. But a typical oracle/database query would hit searches into that segment of the data that has been removed/purged from the File system invariably, and would cause the files to be recalled all the time. This kind of model where there is a lot “purging” and recall activities of files would be detrimental to any archiving solution.
But in this description, it seems like you would not mind this or expect this to happen. I do not think we need to worry about this being databases, as long as user accesses of purged files does not happen all the time.
On Powerlink, you can download an evaluation copy of DXUL to test. It's fully functional. You can find the software here on PowerLink:
Home > Support > Software Downloads and Licensing > Downloads D > DiskXtender
Hope this helps.
