Disk Xtender purge rule

OK let me see if I can explain myself here
I have an extended drive that has filed to approximately 95%. I have the properties on the drive set for purge watermark to start at 75%, and stop at 70%. I did not have a purge rule setup.

I needed a purge rule, which from the administrator's guide is the rule that purges files from your extended drive that have already been written to the SAN and leaves a stub behind.

I have created that rule with a last write time of 365 days so I know that it will only purge files that have not been written to in 1 year, but I wanted to know one thing; when you have a purge rule, and a move rule running at the same time, isn't it going to purge the files from the SAN as well and just leave stubs behind on the SAN? Does the purge rule only delete the file from the extended drive and leaves a stub and not from the SAN?

And if the files are purged (deleted) what is the difference between a purge rule and a delete rule. Does the delete rule delete the file outright from the SAN and delete the stub as well.

Purge and delete are different. Purge essentially shrinks the file on the extended drive leaving behind a stub file. A purge helps make more room available on your extended drive. A delete will physically remove the file from the extended drive.

- 1st in order for a file to qualify for a purge rule it must be moved
- 2nd the move rule will be processed 1st and the purge rule 2nd

- A move is a copy - the data portion of the file is copied to your remote media and the access for that file is from the extended drive
- A purge rule is when the data portion of the file is removed from the extended drive and is only resident on the remote media and access is from the remote media - this is where you will see a stub file on the extended drive

- a delete rule removes the file from your environment completely

hope this helps
