Does your copy of XP have sata drivers?

If not, you have to load them t(during setup when it asks for 3rd party scsi drivers), or burn a copy of XP and slipstream them in.

I don't have a XPS 420, but check in the BIOS to see if there is a setting for the harddrive for SATA or PATA/IDE

Only thing I can think of.
