usb help

I know this is probably a stupid question but oh well it goes. What is the difference between usb 2 and usb 1.1 and how do I know what I have on my computer? I know I have a usb ports (Manufacturer: Intel
Model: Intel(r) 82801BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2442

and the computer system I have is a Dell Dimension 4300. Help!!

No question is stupid as long as you are truely searching for knowledge. You have the original USB interface, or USB 1. USB 2, like USB 1 is an interface on which you can plug in multiple additional accessories to your PC such as scanners, printers, cable modems, speakers etc. The list is long and huge.

The main difference between USB 2 and the original is speed. USB 2 is up to 40 times faster than the original USB ports. USB 2 is very new, and Dell just started shipping their latest PC's with it, and even then not on all models. However, if you have a need for speed you can purchase an add-in board which will give you USB 2 capability.

USB 2.0 is new faster USB protocol that is only now beginning to ship on Dell's computers. If you don't have the latest model, released in the last couple of weeks, then you have USB 1.1.
