Dim 4600 'Phone Line In Use' message during internet connection
i keep trying to connect to the internet from the Dell Dim4600 'new' computer and i get a message that pops up and says something like:
you're trying to use a digital phone
then i get: 'Phone Line in use"
i've checked both phone lines and i get a dial tone on both. i can connect to the internet on the older win95 machine on the phone line in question. i turned the win95 machine off and pulled the phone line out of the wall jack, but the new XP machine still thinks the phone line is in use. the XP machine will not connect on the separate other phone line either, gives the same message.
what now?

Are you using DSL? If so you need to put filters on your phone lines before plugging in the modem.
If this is not the problem I would check with your ISP. Your setting might be off.

Dell_Joanne,
i don't have DSL. and besides, i was able to connect from the win95 computer upstairs with no problem.
the 2 phone lines are not DSL. the 2 phone lines at the Dell computer have a dial tone that i can use to make calls out. but when the Dell is plugged into either one of those lines i get the Phone Line in Use message.
what next?

"there is a dial tone coming into the modem but the modem cannot hear it" Result code 70: No dial tone at modem
i uninstalled the modem and software, placed the modem CD into the computer, rebooted the computer and it didn't detect the modem hardware.
what next?

THat usually indicates a dead modem
If under warranty, call dell.
If not, modems are less than $20 just about anywhere

it was the modem. it was dead. dell sent me a new one and i replaced it. customer service had a terrible time understanding that i needed a new connection made, but i made it while he put me on hold by guessing and fumbling my way through.
i like that modem helper utility built into my dell machine.
