upgrade md3000 to duplex memory error

I'm trying to upgrade my MD3000 from simplex to duplex so I can add another RAID controller. Upon running the smcli command to do so, I received the error:

Could not set redundancy mode at line 1.
Error 5 - An out of memory error occurred on one of the RAID controller modules
in the storage array. Contact your Technical Support Representative about the me
mory requirements for this storage array.
The command at line 1 that caused the error is:

set storageArray redundancyMode=duplex;

I've not rebooted the MD since this is a production environment. Is the solution to this as simple as rebooting to clear some memory?

Also, in the couple of walkthroughs I've read about this subject, some say upgrade the firmware and some don't mention it. I'm on generation 1 firmware and would rather not upgrade that if I don't have to since I've read some horror stories about doing it
