Unable to pull cartridge out of slot - cartridge blocked, couldn't pull tape out of slot from magazine Code: 8A 4D
Hi Team
We have a TL4000 tape library with two tape drives actively used for backups. From the last couple of months, we have observed that the tape library gives below error.
Unable to pull the cartridge out of the slot - cartridge blocked, couldn't pull the tape out of slot from the magazine Code: 8A 4D |
We have canceled the job and reboot the library several times to get it working. We also replaced the tape drive recently and this did not make any difference.
I was wondering if it could be related to old /incorrect/incompatible firmware. The server that communicates with the tape library is Win 2008 R2. Below are the firmware drivers installed on the tape library and connected drives.

a) Is there a more recent version of library firmware? ( Please share the link to download )
b) Is there a more recent version of tape drive firmware? ( Please share the link to download )
c) Please share the best possible combination of tape library and drive firmware(with the download link please)
d) What can be the other cause of the error?

Hello zaki1982,
The error code that you are getting has to due with the slots on your magazines. What you need to do is manually release the magazines and check the cartridges to see if they are being too tightly retained in their slots. You can test this by pushing the cartridges out of the magazine using the finger cut-out on the back side of the magazine. A tight cartridge will offer much more resistance than a normal one-- most likely due to plastic flashing around the retention indentation towards the rear of the cartridge. If a tight-fitting cartridge is found, manually load it and eject it from the magazine ten times or until it loosens. If the problem is consistent, then you will need to replace your magazine.
Here is the link to the latest firmware for LTO6-LTO8 drives & the Library firmware as well. https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=mkt6x&oscode=ws8r2&productcode=powervault-tl4000

Hi
Thanks for the E-Mail. While we are in the process of following the steps mentioned, I still have a doubt regarding the firmware and the driver version.
Looking at the previous screenshot, I guess our tape drive is probably LTO 5 ( ULT3580-HH5 ). could you please confirm if the firmware for the library and the tape driver versions are best and latest.
If not, can you share the link for the same.
