more than likely you will need to replace the drive.
you can download ITDT to see what the drive is doing

From the ITDT System Test Results: Failed Code: EC5
I am getting the same from the Health Test from other sources EC: 5 is a drive failure. Can anyone confirm this? This is a TL1000 LTO7 with up to day library and drive firmware.

Hello dewme,
If you have a drive dump log from your drive I can review it to see what additional errors are happening and see if the drive needs to be replaced.

Hello thanks for everyone's support from this has been pretty well confirmed as a drive error/head issue. Will Dell sell the drive? Or is this an after market? A standalone LTO7 drive is quite expensive not sure on the price is a replacement drive in TL1000.
I have another tape autoloader that is causing errors, this is an IBM TS2900 LTO5 ITDT is EC6, The light are on the front of the drive, it has a new cleaning tape. Can not update the drive firmware IBM requires a service contract for this. Which is part of the reason I have very few IBM items. The drive has worked for years doing a couple of TB backup weekly.

Hello dewme,
For the TL1000 it is a whole system swap as I am not seeing at part# for just the drive. Here are the dell part# H7F1T, & 1XMT9 for a replacement LTO-7, TL1000, Rack Mount, Kit Tape Backup Unit Drive.

depending on your location a 3rd party repair center may be a cheaper option.
error code 6 is also a head fault.
Firmware updates pretty much never fix error code 5 or 6
