SCv3020 question about disk spare

Hello, i have Dell EMC SCv3020 with connected expansion enclosure SCv320, summary i have 54 hard disks, all 54 disks are the same (type,
speed, capacity etc).
Some time ago i have found that one disk in SCv320 enclosure went "Down" state (in Unisphere i see
message "Disk failed or removed") and now state of enclosure is "Critical".
My SCOS version is 7.3.6.17, as far as i know since SCOS 7.3 this storage use distributed sparing
system.
My storage use RAID10-DM and RAID6-10 storage types.
Function "Distributed Optimizer" is "Off" now and i have questions:
- if "Distributor Optimizer" is off now how can i know how many spare drives i have now?
- how many disk can failure simultaneously in my configuration? if i am correct, raid10-dm and raid6-10 can stay
alive when 2 disks went failed state simultaneously
- can i turn on function "Distributed Optimizer" now? will it be succeed if one of the disks is in "Down" (failed) status?

Thanks for your advices and help.

Hi Josh,

first of all i want to thank you for your help.

"There should be 2 drive spares that would have rebuilt." - at current moment in Storage Manager I don't see any spare drives. As far as i know its because my SCOS is 7.3.6.17, and since SCOS 7.3. "No dedicated spare drives are present in a storage system after updating to Storage Center 7.3." - i can see this information here https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/ru-ru/storage-scv3020/sc-7.3-rn/distributed-sparing?guid=guid-3b620077-79f1-4c49-9448-f80e681b69ab&lang=en-us

"How many drives are in each tier?" - i don't know how can i see this information. But all my drives are the same by technical specifications and in Storage Manager all 54 hard drives placed in one folder "Assigned". So if i am correct that means that raid10-dm and raid6-10 share all 54 disks. And all 54 disks are in Tier-1.

If i am not correct can you please give me a point where i can see how many drives are in each tier?

Thanks for your help again.

Hi jeffk,

How many drives are in each tier? RAID10-DM should be able to lose up to half of the drives and raid6-10 can lose 2 drives. Page 272 https://dell.to/3kI5mOJ

There should be 2 drive spares that would have rebuilt. Let us know if you have additional questions.

Replace the failed disk asap. It somewhat depends on how much space is used versus just free space, could be anywhere from hours to days with that much storage.

thanks. can you give me approximately time of distribute spare operation for 54 10k SAS hdd disk 2.4TB size each of them?

how long it can perform?

and after this operation will my massive of disks in "healthy" condition? or i still should replace failed disk asap?

" if sparing was across all drives" - can you give me advice how can i check now was it across all drives or not? as i told before i dont see any information about spare drives.

may be this info can be helpful:

is it safe to turn on "Distributed optimizer" now when one disk is in "Down" status?

Distributed sparing is 20:1 so you could lose one more drive if sparing was across all drives, but if spare optimizer is disabled it could be a smaller number. Turning it on should redistribute the data.

It should be fine, but it will probably redistribute faster if the array is healthy.

ok, thank you so much for your help

i think last question -  what you recommend to do first - replace failed disk or run "Distributed Spare Optimizer" ?

Right one more disk.

ok

but for me it's not absolutely clear - what's the difference will be between current state of storage and the state i'll got after i will turn on and run "Distributed Spare Optimizer"? will it be in more healthy condition after "distributed spare" will finished?

Realistically it probably is the same, probably could handle two drive failures, but if the current distribution is not all of the disks it could be only 1 failure in the current config.

can i clarify - "but if the current distribution is not all of the disks it could be only 1 failure in the current config." - you mean 1 more disk considering that one disk has already broken? 2 disks failure simultaneously?

and what you recommend to do first - replace failed disk or run "Distributed Spare Optimizer"?

I would replace the disk first.
