SCv3020 and ESXi 5.5 hosts

Hi all,

We've recently purchased an SCv3020 to replace an ageing PS array in production.

Our setup:

3 ESXi Hosts

 - Dell PE 710

 - Dell PE 720

 - Dell PE 720

Storage Cluster

 - Dell EQ PS4000 - Firmware 9.0.3

 - Dell EQ PS4100 - Firmware 9.0.3

The problem is with introducing the SCv3020 to the current infrastructure. I'm pretty sure I've configured it correctly, however no matter what method I use to link it to our vCenter it fails every time. Firstly, I've tried the Storage Manager Client 2018 R1.10.

First issue is it will only see 2 of our 3 hosts when I do this. One of the 720's is missing. But even with that aside, if I try to continue with any of the visible hosts I get the following:

So, well, that's infuriating. But when this happens a corresponding error appears in vSphere:

So I thought, alright. Lets try it a different way because this is now consuming WAY too much of my time. I tried the Dell Storage vSphere Web Client Plugin. It took me a while to find this, download it and get it set up.

Then to my utter disappointment, I saw this when I launched the plugin. My stomach dropped, again.

So that method isn't going to work.. I've no idea why the 'Summary' tab is greyed out. I can find NO information online and it's driving me nuts as this was all so straightforward with the PS series of devices, but with this SCv device there is just no explanation whatsoever and I'm only met with generic error messages or no message at all. What on earth am I doing wrong...

Hello CerebralTC, I'm sorry but your screen shots do not show in your Forum Post. Please call in to support for assistance with this issue.

I can now see your screen shots. I can see that you cannot see the Virtual NIC on your ESX server because they do not exist. You need to configure these to allow connections, and if they are configured then verify the MTU is the same on both the SAN and the vNICs. I would still recommend to call in to support since troubleshooting through forum posts are hard to do

Hi Bob,

Thank you for your reply. All hosts already have virtual NIC's, they're working perfectly fine with the current SAN infrastructure. I solved the problem by manually mapping the iSCSI connections to each ESXi host which then allowed me to add the servers to DSM and ultimately let me cluster them within DSM. The 'Create Server from VMWare vSphere or Vcenter' function within DSM does not work in our case and I can only assume it is an issue with DSM.

I do however have another issue that I'm not sure if you'd be able to assist with? DSM is meant to be compatible with PS devices running firmware 9+, however DSM refuses to connect to either our PS4000, PS4100 or their cluster IP. Is there something I am missing? The default port setting within DSM is 3033, however I have tried many more just to rule out the port being incorrect.

I greatly appreciate your assistance.

Kind Regards,

Marc

DSM 2018 R1.10 is compatible PS Series group firmware 7.0–10.0. You cannot connect directly to the PS Series of Storage with the DSM Client. You need to add the PS Series Storage Array from a connection to your Data Collector. Connect your DSM Client to your Data Collector, then add the PS Series Storage Array from the Storage view. Refer to PS Series Storage Array Administration on page 211 of Dell Storage Manager 2018 Administrators Guide https://topics-cdn.dell.com/pdf/storage-sc2000_administrator-guide3_en-us.pdf And also refer to adding PS Series Groups on page 212
