SAN Defragmentation

Hello,

Hope, I'm on the correct thread posted.

We are using SC4020 as our storage and we are using Acronis as Backup application.
During backup on acronis, randomly encountered "highly fragmented" disk.

I'd like to ask here from community. Is our storage need to be deffrag? How check disk fragmentation tool in the EMC Storage Manager?

Thank you.

Hello AnthonyG,

On a SC4020 you don’t do a defrag like you do on a host or client system.  For an SC system you will do a space reclamation.  When space reclamation it will clean up the drives & move data around so that all drives will work more efficiently.

Hello AnthonyG,

With a SC system data progression will run every day and move the data around on your system to maximize performance.  Your SC system can also use different storage profiIes that will allow the data to reside on different drives.

Here is the link to the administrator guide and I would read up on Data Progression, Storage Profiles, alert Thresholds, & low space modes, so that you can understand how all works together. https://dell.to/3Nd0lf2

Hello AnthonyG,

You don’t defrag a san.  What you will want to do is a to confirm that there are no errors on any of the drives first.  Once you know all the drives are in good shape then most likely the error that you are seeing is due to data progression that your SC4020 is doing on a daily basis.  If you have any alerts on your drives then you will want to investigate them to see if the drive needs to be replaced.

Hello DELL-Sam L,

I regularly check each disk per ENCLOSURE through SM-client and all status are good.

Don't defrag a SAN. Is this a statement for all SAN technology? or only for Dell?

Thank you the information. Honestly its my first time to heard about space reclamation. Can you give me a link on how to do the space reclamation system? need to read more on it.

Thank you.
