Perc M800 Raid 10: LEDs of (mirrored?) drives are not flashing

We have got a Perc M800 configured Raid10 from our outsourcing partner. The storage is performing poorly. I notice that one half of the drives are only flashing when data is written to the drives. Could it be that the raid is configured the wrong way and the drives are not used when reading? Could that be the reason for the performance issue?

Best regards from Vienna,

Are you sure about that PERC model? I don't know of any PERC M800. The H800 exists and is for external storage (MD1200 or MD1220).

So a few questions that will be relevant here:

- which server model do you have?

- which PERC model do you have?

- which OS do you have?

- if it's a PERC H800, which enclosure model do you have? (MD1200, MD1220 or non-Dell (which one in this case))

- if you have an H800 with an MD1200/1220, are you using Dell certified drives, or non-Dell drives?

Ups, it is a PERC H800. Here is the missing info:

  • Controller is a PERC H800
  • the enclosure is a Dell PowerVault MD1200
  • Server is a Dell PowerEdge R510
  • Drives are Dell SAS 300GB 15k (the original ones)
  • OS is Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.5 (Tikanga)
  • Kernel is Linux 2.6.18-194.8.1.el5 #1 SMP Wed Jun 23 10:52:51 EDT 2010 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I'd look at your cache settings.   With no cache most raid controllers stink.

For Raid 10 your flashing lights may be normal for the most part.
