Need Attention - Failed Physical Disk

Hello All,

I do have MD3200i + 2 enclosures MD 1200 and 2 raidgroups - raid 6 serving to VMware 5.5 enviorment.

I see disk 7 failed in enclosure 0. Status failed, Mode Unassigned, removal allowed.

I also see a hot spare standby disk available in enclosure 2 slot 10, assigned to protect all groups.

- Why wont standby disk replaces the failed disk automatically?

- or does this means that another hot spare disk have automatically took over the failed one and error is only to replace failed hardware, after adding a new one, hotspare will be retured?
- So, does this also means I still have 2 more disk failure protection for both Raid 6.

- Lastly, Is it safe to rename my disk groups in live system? I see option is available but I want to confirm that it will not create any distruption in my Vmware enviorment?

Thanks in Advance

Hello Beadmin,

If you look at the Major Event Log you should see which drive is taking over for the failed drive.  In most case when a drive will not cover as a hotspare drive is if the drive that is configured as a hotspare is not the same size as the failed drive, or is not the same speed as the failed drive.  You can change the name of your virtual disk in MDSM without an issue.  The host to virtual disk mapping will not change so the virtual disk that is presented to the host will function without any issues.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.
