MD1220 - adding more drives

I have an MD1220 with only half the drive bays in use in raid 5. I want to add more drives to populate all drive bays. When I do that, will I be able to add whole new raid configuration. For example, can I take two of the new hard drives and make those raid 1, then use four new disks as raid 5...

Hello, joe-ntso.

You are correct. Open Manage Server Administrator (OMSA) will allow you to chose what you want to do with those new additions. You will be able to either add them to an existing virtual disk, or create a couple others. What you have mentioned will be fine.

You *should* have an icon for OMSA on the desktop, and that's where you would 'carve out the space' with the new disks.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you. My situation is a little different as it doesn't connect to a windows machine. This connects to a citrix xen server, with virtual machines. I was hoping to use the Dell MD Storage software (Modular Disk Storage Manager)  to carve the new raids, then xen center would see it as unallocated storage space. Using Modular Disk Storage Manager, would I be able to accomplish the goal of carving up new disks into other raid arrays?

Yes. So, different software, and definitely a different process for doing so, nevertheless, the concept is the same. The key point is, the disks will not immediately be consumed by an existing virtual disk as in other storage vendors. You will have the option to carve the space for other purposes.
