MD1000 Replaced Drive into separate controller

We have a customer with a 25TB R5 array (I know its bad, don't ask, inherited) on an MD1000, drive 14 went out, we replaced with exact brand and model, firmware is very close. Most are 0001, and there are a few SN03 and SN04, this new one in question is SN04.

When we replaced the drive it initialized on the same controller, then a few minutes later it put the drive into the Connector 1, when the rest of the array is in Connector 0.  Disk Shows Green in the separate Connector, but we still have an amber light on the drive, and it looks like the drive has a ton of activity.

With seeing varing results I am scared to pull it and try another brand new drive, also being it is R5.  Drive was replaced 3 weeks ago, so the rebuild should have been done by now.

Thoughts? HELP!

Hello bwat283,

On your MD1000 did you have a hotspare drive configured? If you did have a hotspare configured, then when you replaced the failed drive it became the new hotspare. If you didn’t have a hotspare drive configured then the array is still rebuilding possibly. If you look in either OME (Open Manage Essentials), or the controllers bios does it list the array as rebuilding or 100% complete? Also the drive that you replaced did it have a dell label on it?

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

No hotspare setup before, currently no drive is marked as hotspare. I can not see anywhere where it says rebuilding, as luck would have it the Cache battery is bad too. sigh.....  No Dell label on the drive, but it is still the Segate brands as the rest and same SN04 firmware that a few other drives have.

Hello bwat283,

Have you tried to do a manual rebuild? Here is a link to the guide & if you look on page 67 it explains how to start a manual rebuild.
