iscsi error when connecting to EMC AX100SCi

Hello!

I've setup a new Windows 2008 R2 server and want it connected to the EMC SAN we have, but I keep getting the message "initiator error".  So, I looked on a Windows 2003 server which is also connected to this, I double checked the IP address, port etc, adapter etc and set it all to the same on the Windows 2008 server, but still I get the error.

So, I logged into the EMC box, I added a server manually with the right name, ip address, and the correct Initiator Name, assigned some disk space to it etc and that all went ok, but still the iscsi connector gives the error "initiator error".  The security on the EMC SAN is disabled, so there is no requirement for CHAPS or anything.

I know it works with Windows 2008 as the server I have just installed was originally connected to this same EMC SAN with Windows 2008 too, but for some reason it just wont work...

Any ideas or thoughts are appreciated, thanks :)

Are you using the server utility to make the iSCSI connections?

When exactly are you getting the initiator error? Is it when you log into the array ports, on reboot, automatically every few minutes (even when not doing anything in the iSCSI initiator console)?

Which version of Powerpath did you install?

Is your iSCSI network using a subnet different from the LAN/management ports, and are A0 and A1 (and B0 and B1) on unique subnets (e.g. A0 = 192.168.1.10, A1 = 192.168.2.10, B0 = 192.168.1.11, B1 = 192.168.2.11)?

Thanks for the reply.  In answer to your questions:

I am using the iscsi initiator via Control Panel within Windows 2008 to set this up.  I looked on the 2 other machines which are Windows 2003 and are connected to this EMC too, and they are setup using the iscsi connector in Windows too.  I tried to do it via the Navisphere software, but the iscsi option is greyed out in this software.

In Windows, I go to Control Panel, iscsi initiator.  I click on the Discovery tab, click Discover Portal option and put in the following details:  IP address:  192.168.25.48, Port: 3260, and in Advanced Options I select the adapter Microsoft iSCSI Initiator, and set the adapter I want to use 192.168.25.39.  I click ok and get the error "Initiator Error".  Under the targets tab, I tried the Quick Connect option with the same ip address, but this too gives the error.

I am using EMC Powerpath version 5.2 SP1 64bit, and Navisphere Server utility 6.20.4.2.0

The iSCSI ip's are all in the same range as the machines I am connecting too.  Here are the details:

The server I am trying to connect with:  IP: 192.168.25.39, Subnet: 255.255.0.0, Gateway: 192.168.25.254

The EMC SP port is: A-0 IP:192.168.25.48, Subnet:255.255.0.0, Gateway:192.168.25.254, iSCSI name: iqn.1992-04.com.emc:ax.fcnpr052100061.a0

The EMC management port is set to: IP 192.168.25.47

Thanks for your help!

To make sure I understand your IP assignments:

Management ports:

SPA: 192.168.25.47 /16 (255.255.0.0)

SPB: ? (do you have a second storage processor?)

iSCSI ports:

SPA0:192.168.25.48

SPA1: ?

SPB0: ?

SPB1: ?

You need to change your network setup.

iSCSI needs to be isolated from your LAN traffic (VLAN or isolated&dedicated switch(es)). This automatically also means you need to use different subnets for iSCSI from your LAN (and management ports).

So; if your regular LAN is using 192.168.x.x/16, your iSCSI network needs to be changed to a different set of subnets (e.g. 10.1.1.x/24 and 10.1.2.x/24).

Your array management ports cannot be on the same subnet as your iSCSI ports. This causes all sorts of errors and problems and has a very good chance of being the cause of your error.
