How to install a slave drive for DIM 4600 Unsure if Proper Forum
Hey folks, I have Dimension 4600 that I've been wanting to upgrade for a while. I'm planning on getting as much RAM as possible [which seems to be 4GB according to my searches here] and I also want to install a "slave drive."
I'm digital artist and my files tend to get pretty massive, so the 40 GB that came standard on the computer have gotten down to 1.78 GB available. Now, I have an external 500 GB hard drive. It's a standard sized HD as far as I know and I wanted to install it into my desktop. The case has the space for it, plus the cable, so I know all you have to do is plug her in and it's installed.
I had a friend recommend that big HD to be a slave drive and my original 40GB to house my OS and programs [does that sound right?]
My questions are, is there anything else I need to do for it to recognize it other than plug it in? Also, what would be a good setup [e.g. OS and programs in 40GB or 500GB or what?]
So...yea. Any help will be most appreciated.
THANKS!!!

You didn't mention what type of hard drives you have and want to install. If they are SATA, you don't need to do much besides plugging them in. They don't need a pin setup as the older hard drives did. So, if you have a SATA, then just plug them in where you want them. The drive in slot 1 will be the primary, and the one in slot 2 is the slave.
Hope this helps you. = )
P.S. I try to keep the larger drive as my primary since everytime you wish to install software it defaults to that drive. Some applications will give you the choice as to where to install but a lot of them don't.
