Fault reported by SPS. Replace SPS

I received the following 2 email alerts from our SAN the other day:

Time Stamp 07/14/13 06:18:24
Event Number 940
Severity Error Host MSVOTTSAN1_SPA
Storage Array APM00081700058 SPA
Device Enclosure 0 SPS A
Description Fault reported by SPS
Replace the SPS

Time Stamp 07/14/13 06:18:27
Event Number 940
Severity Error Host MSVOTTSAN1_SPB
Storage Array APM00081700058 SPB
Device Enclosure 0 SPS A
Description Fault reported by SPS.
Replace the SPS

I logged into Navisphere and checked the Alerts but there weren't any present so I checked the physical boxes for any warning lights but everything looks green.

Is there somewhere else I can check to find more about these alerts? I've determined that they are referring to the Standby Power Supplies (Battery backups) but from what I can tell, they are operating normally.

(Support has lapsed on these units so can't call in)

Hello MarcLaflamme,

That error refers to a battery test.  That test happens once a week & you will get those errors.  You can’t disable the test as it is written into the Flare( firmware) of the san.  You can change the date & time so that it happens at a time that you want.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

That's odd because this is the first time we've seen this email. Could you think of any reason why this might have all of a sudden started happening?

Hi Sam,

Thanks for the additional info. No we didn't change the templates. Only thing was we recently provisioned another LUN which then had a disk failure and I'm waiting on a replacement. Other than that no.

Sure I'll pull the SPCollects.

Hello MarcLaflamme,

Not sure why you are just now seeing the message.  Did you make any changes to your AEH( Automated Home Email) template? If so then that might have triggered it.  If you would like you can pull some SPcollects from both SP’s I can review them to make sure it was just a test & not an failed SPS.  I will create a dropbox that you can upload the logs to & send you an email with a link to upload the files.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

If any of the SPS units have the amber colored light on in the back, you should replace them.  There's an online tutorial on how to replace an SPS here:
