Failed Disk Scenario MD3460

Hello,

We recently purchased an MD3460 filled with 37 disks and I am writing documentation on how to replace a drive in the unit.

Drawer 0 - 12 disks

Drawer 1 - 12 disks

Drawer 2 - 5 disks

Drawer 3 - 4 disks

Drawer 4 - 4 disks

I have configured all 37  of the disks in one pool. The unit says that there is no drawer redundancy.

Question 1: Does that mean that I will have to power the unit off and replace a hard drive in the event of a failure?

Question 2: How do you achieve drawer redundancy.

Thank you,

Todd

Hello Todd,

You can replace a drive with your MD3460 up & running.  When a drawer is open, it changes the air flow of the system.  For that is why we say that it is best not to leave the drawer open for more than 2 minutes otherwise you might get a temp alert error.  Here is a link to the user’s guide and if you look on page 24 it explains more about the physical disk and the disk drawers. http://topics-cdn.dell.com/pdf/powervault-md3460_owners-manual2_en-us.pdf  There is no way to have drawer redundancy if you were to lose an entire drawer.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi Sam,

We have failed disks on MD3460.  I went over the above MD3460 Owner Manual, page 20-27.   As you said , we can replace a failed drive with MD3460 up & running.  Do we have to remove the SAS cable chain from the back of the chassis, if we do, does it mean the power of the pulling drawer has to be off?  Please help to clarify.  I am waiting for your response before replacing the  failed drive.  TIA

Hello LKkevin,

You don’t want to remove the sas cable chain from the back of the system, If you do so while the system is up then you will cause a data unavailable situation in which you will need support to assist in fixing.  You can change a drive while the system is up and all drawers are powered on.
