Dell ML6000 cannot save library configuration file and cannot upgrade firmware

Hi. I have a Dell ML6000 tape library on version 660G.GS007. All LTO4 tape drives have been upgraded to the latest version of C7QH.

I am trying to Save System Configuration file from this library but it fails after 2 minutes. No RAS tickets are opened. Rebooted library multiple times, no new RAS tickets are generated and still get the same issue.

Also tried to update the library firmware from to the latest version of 710G.GS007 but this just times out and doesn't do anything (no failure is recorded but still just says upgrading firmware). After 90 minutes of no activity the session closes on the GUI and the firmware remains as is. Have tried from 2 different servers using different browsers and still the same issue.

Anyone had anything similar in the past?

We have hardware support on the library not software, and as no hardware failures or RAS tickets are generated the hardware support vendor is reluctant to investigate any further. Read online about either the LCB or CF card being a possibility but the hardware vendor wants it confirmed by Dell or someone else rather than just a guess!

Any help much appreciated.

Hello asevers,

In most cases that I have run into when you can’t get your library firmware to upgrade to the next level there is an issue with the LCB or the CF card.  I have seen where the CF card is working but won’t take the new firmware.  In those cases what you will want to do is to try to reset the system back to factory and then try to flash the firmware again.  If it still won’t upgrade the firmware, then you will want to replace the CF card.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Many thank for the reply and information Sam, will look to get this done over the next couple of weeks.

Was already trying to get a replacement LCB and CF card from our hardware support vendor but was struggling with the licenses side of things as our current library has more slots licensed than the replacement LCB/CF card had.

I will try the factory reset of the library first and attempt the firmware download again and hopefully that will fix it without the need to replace any hardware.

Many thanks for that tapelibraryfixer, any idea on how I obtain an "authorization code" for the license key?

Its asking for one on that website when I input the serial / service tag.

One other thing, on the library itself under setup -> license; shows a Capacity On Demand (COD) license of 179 slots. However on this quantum site its states that there is a factory license of 41 slots, and then a separate line showing 87 slots (which I need the authorization code for). This only totals 128 slots, which is 51 slots short of what the library currently reports is licensed. Any ideas?

Thanks again.

Hi, Sorry know that may be an answer for Sam.

by default depending on size of unit, for example a 23u unit can come with 41, 87, 133, 179, 225 slot activated

So it looks like yours came with 87 slots activated then upgraded to 128/5 - IE/Slots and then to 179.

But im not sure what to do to get it back to 179, each time you upgrade you get a new key that superceded the previous i believe.

Hello asevers,

Can I get you to pull a snapshot from your ML6000 & send it to me so that we can look into your COD license issue?  When your ML 6000 was purchased did you happen to buy an expansion module after the system was purchased or did you purchase both expansion modules with the system?  I will send you a private message so that you can send me the snapshot.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.
