Dell MD3000i

I want to change hard drives to bigger sizes. Whats the best way to do this? Should I slowly replace one drive daily to a bigger one?

This is an option yes. Note that you cannot mix SAS and SATA drives within a single disk group, so you cannot replace a 300GB/15k rpm SAS drive with 1TB 7200rpm SATA drives for example.

You could replace a SAS drive with a nearline SAS drive assuming it's a supported drive (see MD3000-series support matrix).

And as you may have read in many of the other posts, the MD3000i only supports Dell certified enterprise class drives with a Dell firmware and a Dell partnumber (the label will have a Dell part number (DP/N) that should be in the support matrix).

Hello elec999,

As Dev Mgr stated that you can replace the drives one at a time with a bigger one. What you will have to do is that once all the drives have been replaced then you will need to go into MDSM and then you should be able to see the extra space and be able to expand the virtual disk & or disk group with the new space.

Also as Dev Mgr has stated that you need to make sure that the new drives that you are putting in are Dell certified drives otherwise the drive will spin up for a few seconds then spin down & be turned off & marked as bad & then that drive will not spin back up in the MD3000 again. Here is a link to the support matrix for the supported drives on page 10. ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_ser_stor_net/esuprt_powervault/powervault-md3000i_Reference%20Guide_en-us.pdf
