Configure RAID 0 on T5400 with SAS 6/IR

I have a Precision T5400 with a Dell SAS6/IR controller.  The original configuration is 64bit Vista  with one 300gb HD.  RAID was not configured.

I recently dropped in a new Hitachi drive and am looking to setup RAID 0.  I understand this may be done by either software or Hardware (RAD controller).

First I am looking to upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate.

If I decide to utilize the Hardware approach I will need to reconfigure both drives?  The original drive was basic, now dynamic.  Both are now dynamic.

Was thinking of simply copying all data over to the backup and delete both volumes and start from baseline after / during the Windows 7 installation.

Ideas?  Problems to look for?

If you want to do raid 0 as a boot drive with the help of the SAS6iR controller's raid capabilities, you'll have to do the following:

- back up all your data

- configure the raid 0 in the SAS6iR's bios

- restore your data (or just install Windows 7 clean) and stay away from dynamic disk

Note: keep in mind that on a raid 0, if you lose 1 harddrive (failure), you lose all data. Raid 1 gives redundancy (other redundant raid types aren't supported on the SAS6iR).

Dynamic disk (software raid) itself does support raid 0 (striping), but not for a boot disk, and you cannot convert with dynamic disk (you have to create the raid 0 from scratch).
