AX150i: Number of LUNs and Performance

Hello Guys,

Please spare me if this topic has been discussed earlier in this forum, but since I could not find similar post within this huge knowledgebase I would like to  know your experiences and thought over this..

I have AX150i (6TB) of raw capacity which i am planning to use in this project,  there will be solaris server seating in the front to which the LUNS will exposed.

We have been thinking about what could be the best way to expose SAN to Solaris, and following could be some of the options..

1) We either create big LUNs of Terrabyte size and use it upto the limit

2) or we take all usable space and create 100GB LUNs out of it and use it as and when require

Now this might help you understand, that we don't have any specific requirement regarding how LUNs should be erxposed to Solaris as they will be part of one single ZFS pool on solaris, so we are more curios in knowing if there are any advantage or disadvantage in using small LUNs and Big LUNs as far as SAN is concerned

Unless you're considering/planning to possibly use the disk space for a different server as well, I'd create a single virtual disk (lun) of the max size, or maybe create 2 disk pools (raid groups); each with a single virtual disk of the max size.

 

The virtual disks are owned by 1 storage processor at a time, and all virtual disks in a single diskpool should be owned by the same storage processor for best performance. So by creating 2 diskpools with 1 virtual disk each both storage processors could be doing something instead of 1 storage processor doing everything and the other just waiting for the first storage processor to fail (and it would then take over).

 

As for performance; you can probably expect 30-50 MB/s in sustained throughput. Obviously this isn't real-world unless you plan on doing backup-to-disk or streaming audio/video, so the throughput may be a bit lower for real world IO.
