AX150i Disk Fragmented

Hello All,

We had a major shifting couple of month back and during that several LUNS were created,deleted for carrying out pre-shifting tests. Now the thing is most of the LUNs are showing "Fragmented" status and we believe SAN performance have been degraded considerably.

 

The incident that made us believe the performace issue with the SAN is we tried copying 80GB data from SAN drive to externally connected drive which took about 90 minutes, whereas when we tried same copy process other way round from external drive to san it took 8 Hrs 30 minutes.

 

No we are trying to figure out following..

1) How much performance impact it will have if disks are showing as "fragemented"

 

2) Are there any risks of running defrag, considering it has production data on it. ( one problem everyone tell on varios forums is the time this process takes is very uncertain)

 

3) We have not connected SAN to their own UPS, by thinking we already have everything connected to UPS. In coule of places i read not connecting UPS to SAN disables "write cache" function and that degrades the performance.

 

4) Despite we have deleted couple of mid size LUNS still space is not getting released

 

Setup: AX150i, 6TB, 10 LUNs created, 3 LUNs are of 500GB each, 1 LUN is of 1.5TB

 

I am kind of concerned regarding defrag operation since its uncertainty of time and risks involed and if its worth to take those risks.
