AX100 - new/non standard drives
Hi,
Tried to follow instructions for new drive purchasing on http://www.emc.com/microsites/clariion-support/ax100/pdf/300-002-276.pdf
i.e. for my OS version (02.19.100.5.014) I needed Model No : AX-SA-500 Part No : PN005048606
Managed to get som AX-SA07-500 from etb-tech, with caddies but they didn't know a part number as they couldn't see any EMC stickers.
Turns out they were Hitachi Ultrastar HUA7201050KLA330 , but I was told that this is what EMC/Dell used.
So tried a couple in the SAN. They are recognised as drives and of the correct size, but when viewing them in "Components" of Navisphere - their part number is UNKWON while the pre-installed drives show up as "005048606" i.e. the correct drives.
Is this Ok - will they stil work ?
Or do I need to update the OS ? In which case see my comments on the AX100/150 info thread. I cannot update at the moment.
They seem to create a Disk pool ok. Not tried creating a virtual disk yet as I need to add more drives - just need to move things around in the cabinet to access the lower trier of spaces first.

The AX100 doesn't have a drive lock (to prevent non-EMC drives from coming online), so it'll accept any drives you put in it.
As most AX100's will already be out of warranty I assume you're not using it in a production environment, in which case it's probably an acceptable risk to run on drives that haven't been loaded with EMC firmware (and there's no way to load it on the drive yourself).
