Add DAE-AX to AX4-5 process
I have to add a DAE-AX enclosure to my AX4-5, which right now only has the DPE-AX, and I have a couple of questions:
- it looks like, from some stuff I've read, that you can actually add this on the fly- that is, plug in the expansion cables, power up the DAE, go to Navisphere, and voila, you have more disks. From there, you start making RAID groups, etc. Is that right? Or am I missing something?
- The first four disks of the DPE have the storage processor OS on them, and so are something like 17GB smaller than the other eight. Is that true for the DAE?
Thanks to all in advance.

All of this is correct, with 1 addition; verify under Software if the "expansiontier" enabler is installed already. If not, you cannot add a DAE, so you'd have to add this first (is licensed and has to be purchased (may have been sold with the DAE if your salesrep was aware that you didn't have it yet). This enabler is easy to install if you have it (on CD); under software, click to upgrade, browse to the CD with the enabler, pick the enabler file (has a .ena extension), and follow through. This may reboot the storage processors (one at a time), but if your servers are dual-connected (to both SPs), no downtime is needed (but the rebooting of the SPs does cause the write cache to disable).

Thanks for the info- yes, I have the .ena file on CD to enable the expansion. Especially, thanks for the tip that updating will reboot SPs; everything is dual-connected, but I think I'll do that update after-hours just to be sure....

The enabler is licensed software. If you purchased it, contact EMC to get access to it on Powerlink.
