Add blank disks to AX100
I am in the process of adding four new 500GB disks (from Dell) to my Ax100 fibre, in addition to the existing operating eight drives, 250GB each. The capacity now is 2.6TB and the FLARE is at version 02.19.100.5.048. I wanted to make sure with you that to add the four blank disks, one needs to insert them in the empty slots while the SAN device IS UP AND RUNNING. One can then either create another virtual disk, or expand the existing 2.6TB to include the brand new 2TB storage. Thank you all.

If you want to add space to an existing virtual disk, you have to add the disks to the disk pool first. To do this you go to the disk pools and select the diskpool you want to extend. You'll see an option to extend it. Add the extra drives and let it restripe the raid set. This will be very time consuming (24-48 hours easily, possibly more). During this time IO can continue (don't have to take your server(s) down), but performance will be impacted.
After the restriping has finished, you can go to the virtual disk in this pool and you select to extend it. Here you can select to extend with a certain number of GBs, or by a percentage (never personally seen a reason to use the percentage, but that's a different story).
If your current diskpool is using drives smaller than 500GB and you add 500's to the pool, only the drive space of the original disks will be usable; the rest is unusable.
If you have a hotspare, make sure it's the size of the largest disks so it can take over for any failed drive (including smaller).
