Accessing a Dell SCV2020 Without Username / Password

Hello everyone,

Im working at a company which purchased another company, who ultimately ended up acquiring some hardware from the international location.

Of these items, we received a Dell SCV2020.

I haven't really worked with anything like this before, but after doing some research through the forums here and it seems that it may be very difficult to be able to access the management interfaces using the Dell Storage Manager Client, without the username / password. I've tried the defaults and talking to previous employees in that company. They had a remote IT company manage all of their hardware, so nobody has any knowledge of the credentials....

After doing a bit of research i found some threads that mentioned using a unlock.py USB key to by pass the login... but this would require talking to Dell Tech support...

So i tried to follow that avenue and see if they could help me. Well the device is out of warranty and they wanted a $1000 service fee to trouble shoot it, or pay $1500 - $3000 to extend the warranty and receive more support. We dont want any of the data on the drives, we just want to integrate this into our current server setups and use them as additional storage.

So at this point I've been able to use wireshark to see what the IPs for the device is and have narrowed it down to two addresses...

192.168.50.99 (BMC) I can SSH into this, but dont have the credentials....

10.51.106.179 This is the same MAC as the 192.168.50.99, but all ports and connections here are blocked...

Any suggestions or help in this case? We just want to utilize this hardware, and at this point if we can access the management interface or anything to configure it, its basically useless to us, which is a bit disappointing.

The official guide for unlocking is located here https://www.dell.com/community/s/vjauj58549/attachments/vjauj58549/EntryLevel-and-Midrange-CN/3527/1/690-051-001%20Tech%20Tip%20Recovering%20a%20Locked%20Administrator%20Account%20in%20SCOS%206%205.pdf

We have 4 dozen SC2020, 3020, 4020, 5020 and i have use the procedure a couple of times but i cant remember if its working on every model or how is it related to the SCOS version.

But..

  • Better use a smaller and older USB stick than a large one
  • The USB needs to be placed in the leading controller (so if the first isnt working try the other one) as long as the CMs are paired together. If you are able to log into use controller show to find out on which controller youre working
  • The SCOS needs up to 30sec until it mounts the USB. So be patient and wait
  • The hardcoded username of a SC is always "Admin" (with a uppercase A)
  • You can than choose every password you want except a empty string. So using the default password "mmm" is fine but a "" will not work.
  • You will able to login on the serial console as well as with the Dell Storage Manager Client GUI as long as as the unlock.py is active

The SC2020 have a BMC and MGMT on the same phys. network port this is whys you see one MAC and to IPs when sniffing. Dell suggest to reconfigure the BMC to a non routable network (169.254.xx.xx) because of issues. If you can reach the BMC question is there another default login or the original Admin needed. For sure you will the the oldest HTML/JAVA!!! you can imagine. I was one connected to it and found nothing usefull :). The later SC have a Dell iDRAC.

If i find my installation books i can post if there is a default user/pass for the BMC.

Joerg

Hello Joerg,

How can I tell which is the leading controller?

When creating this unlock.phy, does the need to have the "<>" need to be there? Should I be using the DSM to login after insterting the USB, or should i SSH into the BCM, and try there?

Its without the < >.
Iam not aware if there is a hint when watching the boot msg to verify which is the leading CM. If you login into SCOS its

controller show

Yes you can use DSM to log into the system. The serial parameter are 115200/8/1/n

When I run the DSM as admin, I still encounter a need "elevated privledges" issue when trying to "discover" the storage centers... in addition, i've tried to ping these, and get no response, as well as doing a port scan and finding that all ports are in an "ignored state" what would be the next step?

Or should I try to see if I can use the DSM to try to connect to 10.51.106.178 / 10.51.106.179? I also see these addresses sending arp requests from the same MAC as the BMC, I suppose these are the management interfaces as well?

Yes, please try to connect with DSM to your MGMT IPs.

Keep in mind that Port 3033 needs to be specified. If you start DSM with Admin rights you can also try to discover a SC. But you should be placed within the 10.51.106.0 with DSM.

The discovering needed to find uninstalled SCs.
If you cant ping the MGMT IPs than the serial connection is needed.

Take a look for a 3.5mm jack in the upper right of the TOP Controller. The other end of the cable is a RS232. No fancy USB2Serial.

"3.5MM Jack -> RS232 female -> Male -> USB work"

Yes!. Modern laptop doesnt have a RS232 any more and i always use my Serial2USB on the laptop side when installing a SC.

If this is a standalone or a SC2020 with a expansion unit? If its the later please take notice that both controllers needs to be cross cabled with the help of the 6Gbit SAS backend ports. This is different compared to the SC3020!

Joerg

Well, after looking at the manual, I found out that there is indeed a serial port, and its actually a 3.5mm jack. I've never seen that before, I was looking for the traditional RS-232 port. I dont have one of these cables lying around, I'll have to either make one, or order one. Would a 3.5MM Jack  -> RS232 female -> Male -> USB work?

My mind is still blown that the 3.5mm jack is the serial port.... anyway, it  has two controllers, and both are connected using the Sas Cables. I should be able to have an update on monday when I receive the cable adapter.

Hey I just wanted to update the situation, with the usb unlock.phython and ordering the 3.5mm -> serial cable -> usb did the job. Thank you for the help!! Is there a list of command line commands that I can reference? I would ultimately like to clean this device up. I'm going to see if I can locate any resources online.

controller show

from both controller to verify if they are joined together and not both running as master. The command will also display the IP configuration of the CMs.

Joerg
