How to remove certain updates from OME?

We have OME setup and running just fine.  However, it detects PSU firmware updates for our servers which don't work.  Multiple people from Dell have told me to NOT install the PSU firmware as it can mess up the server.  I was directed to Repo Man as a way to take the info form Dell, remove the PSU updates, and then point OME at it so it would not try to install those items.

However, I haven't been able to find any information on how to do this exactly.  Most of the info i find on Repo Man is either very old, very incomplete, or both.

Does anyone have any instructions on how to simply remove the power supply updates from the main repository and then point my OME server to this new one?  Also, how then do I know when new versions of things have been released if I'm using my own local repository?

Thanks!

Hi,

Do you want to create a new Repository using Dell Repository Manager and then remove PSU updates or do you have a catalog which you would like to import it to Repository Manager and then remove PSU updates?

Thanks,

Sashi

Whichever is easiest or best?  All we do now is open up OME and go to the Non-Compliant page since everything shows as non-compliant since we don't install the PSU updates.

Then how do we know when new updates have been released so we know to update the repository?

Thanks!

Hi,

Request you to please go through this whitepaper on using Dell Repository Manager with OME. It has all the details.

http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/extras/m/white_papers/20438119

For latest/new updates you need to use Schedule Repository Refresh from Dell Repository Manager. You may please refer the below link for more details.

http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/b/techcenter/archive/2015/02/13/using-schedule-repository-search-option-to-update-the-openmanage-essentials-ome-repositories-dell-repository-manager-drm

Please let me know if you still face any issues.

For removing particular DUPs, you can go to the components page in DRM for the desired Repository and for desired Bundle, and just put the keyword like "PSU" in the search option on left side and then you can select those and press delete.

Thanks,

Sashi

That link goes to the Dell OpenManage Integration for VMware vCenter.

I have one already that talks about OME but it was written years ago for older versions or Repo Manager.  I'm using version 2 since it's the latest and nothing matches what's in the paper.  Someone needs to update that with current instructions or something.

Or do I need to call the Pro Support line to have someone walk us through it?

Hi,

To create a new repository, please follow the steps:

1) Load Dell online catalog by clicking "View Dell Online Catalog" or if it is a fresh/first time installation of Dell Repository Manager, a yellow flashing appears on the right hand top corner as "New Dell Online". Select either as per the situation.
2) Once the catalog is loaded, you will see the Bundles page, select the desired bundle or bundles. You can use the filter options available on the left side pane. Keyword search is the preferred one. Suppose you are searching for PowerEdge Rack 420, you can type it as PER420.
3) Once your selection is complete, click on the "Export" option and then a wizard launches. Select "Export as NEW repository" and follow the wizards and finally click finish.
4) Open the newly created Repository, go to Components page, and then select the components you want to delete. If you want to delete PSU firmware(s), you can use the keyword search option on the left side pane as PSU. Select those firmware/s and then click "Delete". In case you have multiple bundles, then select the desired bundle and go to the Components page and select and delete accordingly.
5) Once deletion is completed, click "Save" option on the top. A dialog box launches which asks you to provide a location to save. You can also provide multiple locations to Save by clicking "+" symbol.
6) If you want to save catalog + repository, select 1st option (which is selected by default). Else select the 2nd option which saves only Catalog.
7) Once you click Save finally, a job gets submitted in the Jobs Queue section. Job Queue processing time depends on the option you selected in 6th step.
8) Once your job gets completed, you may use that for OME.

In case you have a catalog already available from which you want to delete some firmware, just go to Help menu and then select Import previous version (pre v1.5) Repository. Browse the catalog, a job gets submitted and once completed, it appears as a repository. After that, please follow from step 4 and then again save and use it in OME.

In case you want latest updates for your repository, you may use the Schedule Repository Search option available on the My Repositories page.
Select your desired repository, click on Schedule Repository Refresh, system details will be populated automatically. Select your filters.

Click Next. In the Actions page, you can provide a location to save your repository in which the Catalog + firmware get updated as and when your repository gets refreshed which can be later used for OME/vCenter etc.... You will find hovers for help. You may set the frequency at which you want to get the updates.
If you want the updates mailed to you, you may also configure Email Settings in the final page. Once you click Finish, a task gets created and your repository gets refreshed as per your frequency settings. You also get mail as and when any new update is available in your repository.

Please let me know in case you have more questions/doubts.

Thanks,

Sashi.

I'll try this now.

One question.  What's the difference between the Data Center Version and the Business Client Version of Repo Manager?  Haven't been able to figure that out and don't know if it matters which one I run.

Thanks.

I believe the difference between the two is that Data Center Version is geared towards servers and Business Client is for desktop.

Hope this helps.

Data Center version will download the Catalog.cab from ftp.dell.com which contains updates for Dell Enterprise portfolio (Servers, networking, storage). Business Client version will download the CatalogPC.cab which contains updates for Dell Business client systems (Desktops, Laptops).

Thanks,

Sindhu

I'm getting a 503 error trying to do the New Dell Online option since this is a new install.  Look like other people are getting this as well.  Is something down?

Tried this again today and it did let me import the catalog.  Don't know what the problem was yesterday.

So, on the bundles page, is it best to select the bundle for each model of server we have in our environment?  We currently have r410, r610, and r620 servers.  Do I just check the 32/64 bundle for each one and export into one, big repository?

OK, so I got the repository created and saved but now how do I point OME at it?  I don't see anywhere that I can configure where it looks to see what's available.

Hi,

You can select all the three bundles at a time and make it as one repository or select three bundles separately and make it as 3 different repositories. Whichever suits best you can try that way.

Once you have the repository, you may refer the whitepaper on how to point to OME.

Thanks,

Sashi

I've read a couple of the White Papers and I only see how to get a list of servers from OME and use that lsit in RepoMan to create the repositories.  I don't see anything about how I then tell OME to use the custom Repository to check for updates.

Can you direct me to which white paper that would be on?

Hi and thanks for the detailed steps.

I have created a couple of repositories.

On of them is without any driver or firmware update concerning NICs.

(I followed your steps by deleting all components relevant to NICs)

I have done this because broadcom updates are never successful even if i do it on the server it self using .exe files and not via OME.

After the new repositories were completed, i have point the new catalog.xml of it to OME.

I still get the Broadcom updates listed and all servers not compliant because of that.

I have done this procedure from scratch 2-3 times with same results.
