Dell Linux ISO Scripts

Hey,

I was wondering if anyone has ever come across an inventory scan script for the Dell Linux ISO boot, mainly to quicken the process as this goes through 79 updates which is also great but would be better to detect your system inventory and only update exactly what we have in the chassis.

Thanks David.

Hi,

Please check this whitepaper on using Dell Generic inventory.

This will help you to achieve this scenario.

Thanks

Thank for the reply,

As the environment I am in the situation is the following:

We have 4000 PowerEdge servers and we they all have different Operating systems on we need to use this in a Pre-boot environment before the O/S such as the Linux Iso Boot.

By the looks of this it needs to be in a windows environment.

Kind regards,

Thank you for the reply.

Yes this is correct unfortunately the servers inventory are all different! such as different SAS drives and different raid cards some have 10GBE pcie cards etc.

The Linux ISO boot works a treat as It will update everything! just the thing is it runs through the whole DUP pacakage which can be up to 75 updates (Mainly SAS Drive FW)

The main point is we need it to scan that system running at the time in a pre-boot linux iso (which is created under Dell Repo Manager 1.8) because at the moment it does the following:

[2/75] - Executing R210_BIOS_F6VTH_LN_1.10.0.BIN

Running Inventory scan

Executing update or if server is not compatible (moves to the next one)

[3/75] - Executing ESM_Firmware_63KCR_LN32_1.96_A00.BIN

Thanks David.

Hey, pls use Save Target As on the Linux link as browsers may not initiate a download by default! :emotion-1:

Hi Dsavell,

Unless the servers are varying in configuration, running the inventory collector on one of the servers should suffice. And also Inventory collector is available for both Linux and Windows, so OS shouldn't be a problem given the servers don't run on Windows.

Hope this helps

Thanks,

Krishna

Unfortunately this is not possible with the current bootable Linux iso. Your requirement may still get fulfilled by using Repository manager with OpenManage Essentials. Or, if all the systems are having same configurations, then the inventory file can be collected for one server and create a repository based out of it and apply accordingly using Linux iso. Thanks, Shashi.

Further to this is it possible to even write a script that can do this? because this would shorten the time down by at least 40 minutes per server, surely if this does an inventory scan every time it should be able to do one to start off and pick the files it needs to update.

Kind Regards,

Hi,

You may try putting your custom shell script for Linux ISO. DRM provides an option to put your custom script instead of the default script it uses.

Or you may also try using Light Weight Deployment Script option.

Hope it helps.

Thanks,

Shashi

Adding to my previous reply, you may go through the Whitepaper available Linux ISO from DRM: http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/extras/m/white_papers/20438117.aspx

Thanks,

Shashi.
