Change between DTK_651.cab and DTK_730.cab causes USB boot to fail with error "apply_bundles.sh is invalid"
Hi there,
I'm having issues creating a USB-bootable Dell Repository Manager firmware updater, based on the Linux Bootable ISO that's created by DRM 1.7.
The conversion from ISO to USB boot works fine when the DTK_651.cab plugin is used from C:\Users\ \AppData\Local\RepositoryManager\Payloads\. However, since DTK_730.cab was downloaded, myself and some others on the internet are having issues when booting from USB. Basically it fails with the error "apply_bundles.sh is invalid". When booting from DVD, everything works fine.
I'm convinced DTK_720.cab used to work too, but oddly I can't find it in http://ftp.us.dell.com/sysman/ so I've no idea where to obtain it (and a google search for DTK_730.cab turns up nothing).
More background information is available in the comments here: http://www.twistedethics.com/2013/04/19/making-the-dell-deployment-media-linux-iso-usb-bootable/#comments
Is anyone at Dell able to help me out with this issue? I've tried both Unetbootin and Rufus and neither work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated :)
Cheers,
Phil

Hi Shashi,
I understand, although I am a little confused by your statement, as Dell wrote about it in a whitepaper: http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/extras/m/white_papers/20093159/download.aspx. (Page 12). Although admittedly they don't strictly say "This is supported".
It used to work, Dell know it used to work, and now it doesn't. If we can figure out why, maybe we can get things back, even if they're not supported.
Cheers,
Phil

Hi Phil,
DTK never supported booting from a USB drive. Booting a DTK iso can only be done from a CD/DVD or a virtual mount.
Even if it worked till DTK 7.2 from a USB, Dell does not claim any support for that.
Thanks,
Shashi.

Hi Phil,
Can you please paste the error or screenshots?
Thanks,

Hi Shashi,
Thanks for your steps. Unfortunately, I still get the same error message with those steps :(
I'll try to look into this some more over the next few weeks.
Cheers,
Phil

Hi Phil,
Firstly, I apologize for whatever was claimed in the whitepaper.
As of today DTK does not claim any support for booting from USB drive.
As a workaround, I have tried the following and works successfully:
1) Use Rufus(http://rufus.akeo.ie/) for creating USB bootable.
2) Select the linuxiso created as input.
3) Make sure to uncheck Create extended label and icon files.
4) After that, make sure to check "Add fixes for old BIOSes (extra partition, align, etc)" and "Use Rufus MBR with BIOS ID: 0x80(default)"..
5) Finally, start the process of creating bootable usb.
If you follow the above procedure, it should work.
Please Note: This works only in BIOS mode and it is only a workarount. UEFI support DTK 7.3 only works by using the iso through CD/DVD or virtual mount and not with USB.
Thanks,
Shashi.

Hi Phil,
Please make sure you are using the server only in BIOS mode and not UEFI mode.
UEFI doesn't work with USB.
Thanks,
Shashi.

Hi Shashi,
I can confirm that I'm using BIOS mode. I am not using UEFI.
Here's the error I get:
Ben Hopper over on my blog has done some investigations and it looks like the scripts are failing to mount the USB drive in /dev/sdb1 to /opt/dell/toolkit/systems/ [comment]. Ben has since found some more information around the start-stage3.sh script [comment]
Cheers,
Phil

Hi Phil,
The error is due to the DTK iso does not mount(/opt/dell/toolkit/) if created from USB pen drive.
Like I mentioned, the support from DTK is yet to be added.
Till then, you may please use the iso through virtual mount or burn on a CD/DVD.
Meanwhile if I find any other workaround, I would inform to you.
Thanks,
Shashi.

Hi Phil,
DTK 740 is released.
Convert Iso to USB Key using Tools like Rufus / UnetbootIn is working again.
But keep in mind, it's still unsupportet.

Hello,
Exact same errors as Phil. However I'm using virtual media from the idrac console with bootable ISO generated from DRM.
This works fine on most machines except PE 720.
Anything special with PE720?
