Pro Max 16 Premium MA16250, Ubuntu and discrete GPU
Hi,
I'm trying to configure the Dell Pro Max 16 Premium Laptop (Model MA16250) with Ubuntu and an NVIDIA GPU, but the website states: “Ubuntu Operating System can only be configured with Integrated Graphics Card.”
I need to use Linux and also require at least the RTX Pro 2000. Will Ubuntu with an NVIDIA GPU be supported for this model in the future? The laptop is still quite new, so I'm wondering if this option might become available later.
Alternatively, is the Pro Max 16 Plus my only option? That model supports Ubuntu with an NVIDIA GPU, but I'd prefer the less bulky Premium version.
Thanks for your help!
Best,
Dan

Given that most of the later XPS models (the Premium line is the successor) shipped without Linux support, it's not something you can count on.

I think the Dell Pro Max 16 Premium model is the successor to the Precision 5000 series. The renaming is so confusing. The Precision 5690 is supported with Ubuntu and an NVIDIA GPU, but of course that doesn't mean they will add the same support for the Pro Max 16 Premium :(

I received one last with the RTX Pro 3000, I can tell you that it works with the latest NVIDIA drivers. However, I am struggling with the TB5 support. We bought the SD25TB5 docking station, but the TB5 does not support video transport, which is very surprising and quite useless. Also prefer the 6.11 kernel, the 6.14 brings me more troubles with the docking station plugged (thus with the TB4 connector), the screen blinks quickly until you unplug and replug the monitor on the docking station. And the worst is a periodic 30s freeze, when the laptop is plugged **and** the laptop screen down, apparently because of the Nvidia HDA. Every time it happens, I can read in the journalctl:
kernel: nvidia 0000:01:00.0: Enabling HDA controller
I am in contact with Dell support to resolve this issue, but this is really a pity at such a price. I am considering sending it back. That's my third Dell laptop, and every time it was a pain during the first months. On the previous Precision 5570, I had to switch to the Xanmod kernel at the beginning. At least this time, the suspend-to-RAM feature seems to work!
I am even considering giving up with NVIDIA GPUs, they made me suffer so much on Linux for more than 20 years. I just quickly ported the AI inference engine of my company to OpenVINO and I was surprised how easy it was. It works not so badly... The Intel Arc 140T, at first glance, seems at least at the power level of the A2000 I had on the 5570, even a bit better.
